In the Fall of 2009 Brother introduced a line of color desktop printers and multifunction printers (MFPs) rated at 17 pages per minute (ppm) letter and 16 ppm (A4), for both color and monochrome documents. In January 2012 several new models were introduced with print speeds increased to 19 ppm (letter) for both monochrome and color prints.

The supplies set for all machines in the series is physically the same, with different SKUs for different geographic markets. Toner cartridges and drum units are sold separately. A flag (reset) gear is located on the toner cartridges, and neither the drum units nor toner cartridges are chipped.
